Put Your Attachments into the FileVault
|
Sending attached documents to your colleagues via e-mail is easy and very convenient. Occasionally, though, you run into problems when an attached file cannot be sent through the e-mail system because the file is too large or is a type that is blocked by e-mail programs or mail servers. Sometimes you don’t even know the attachment didn’t go through until your colleague contacts you and says he or she couldn’t open it. ANR Communication Services has an answer for this problem—an easy method to transfer a file of any size or any type. Known as the “FileVault,” this browser-based system sends your file to one of our servers where your colleagues can download it. The “attachment” glitch disappears because the file is no longer attached to an e-mail message. This simple system has already been used hundreds of times in the past two months. Using the FileVault - Go to: http://ucanr.org/filevault.
- Click on the “Add a File” link on the left.
- Click the “browse” button, and locate your file.
- Enter in your e-mail address
- You can change the file’s name, notes, and expiration date.
- After you click “Save Your File,” the file will be sent to the CS server. (This may take as long as one minute per megabyte, depending on your connection speed.)
- You will receive an e-mail with a link and instructions on how to download the file.
- Forward this e-mail to your colleague.
The FileVault is available to all ANR employees. Non-ANR employees can retrieve attached files from the server, but they cannot add files to it. If you have any questions about the FileVault, please contact Karl Krist at kakrist@ucdavis.edu or 530-297-4441.
